Councils work together to wish registered electors a Happy 18th Birthday

In a joint initiative Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, West Dorset District Council and Christchurch Borough Council are sending cards to all registered electors for their 18th birthdays to encourage young people to vote.

To fund the project all three authorities have worked together to secure a democracy participation grant. The cards contain information about the authorities and feature web addresses where registered electors can find out more about voting. They are being produced by local graphics company ‘Cleary Creative’.

Anne Kenwood, Brief Holder for Social Inclusion said: ‘Sending birthday cards is a wonderful way to engage young people in the democratic process, emphasising that they can help to shape the future in a way they would like it to be. It’s important that young people are encouraged so that as many people vote as possible. By being presented with the necessary facts they will be able to make an informed decision.’
